__SALUTATION__
For months, reports from California's private immigration detention centers have painted a disturbing picture: inadequate medical care, contaminated drinking water, unsanitary conditions, and people being denied basic human dignity.

A federal judge recently ordered sweeping changes at the Adelanto ICE detention center, requiring access to safe drinking water, adequate medical care, nutritious food, and basic sanitation. But according to new reports, those conditions have still not improved.
No one should be subjected to these conditions. And no private corporation should be making millions of dollars while failing to provide even the most basic standards of care.
That's why I introduced AB 1633.
My bill would impose a 50% tax on the gross receipts of corporations operating private immigration detention centers in California. If these companies choose to profit from a system that repeatedly subjects people to inhumane treatment, they should not receive a financial windfall for doing so.
AB 1633 has now advanced to the Senate Appropriations Committee, bringing us one step closer to holding these corporations accountable.
California cannot control every decision made by the federal government. But we can decide whether companies are allowed to profit from detention without accountability.
I'll continue fighting to protect immigrant communities, defend basic human rights, and ensure our state does everything it can to discourage this harmful business model.
Thank you for standing with me.
With gratitude,
